Why Ordinary People Need to Understand Power

Far too many Americans are illiterate in power — what it is, how it operates and why some people have it. As a result, those few who do understand power wield disproportionate influence over everyone else. This TED Talk teaches us about the art of effective and creative citizenship and how to gain and use power for the betterment of all.

Why Good Leaders Make You Feel Safe

What makes a great leader? Management theorist Simon Sinek suggests, it’s someone who makes their employees feel secure, who draws staffers into a circle of trust. But creating trust and safety — especially in an uneven economy — means taking on big responsibility. Leadership is a choice. It is not a rank.

Read them all, reflect on the kind of leader you want to be known for, and choose one that best fits your own leadership vision.

Communications Lessons From Old Blue Eyes; 1963

The legendary Frank Sinatra (1915–1998) can teach us a thing or two about engaging an audience. I stumbled upon this 1963 Playboy interview with Sinatra recently, and it's pure gold. "When I sing, I believe," says Sinatra. "I’m honest. If you want to get an audience with you, there’s only one way. You have to reach out to them with total honesty and humility."
